Ease of Use and Management

Unlike FTP, ShareFile can be accessed using any web browser and does not require the opening of additional ports or the installation of special software to use it. FTP traffic travels over port 21, a special port that is often closed by firewalls at large corporations for security reasons.

All communications between ShareFile and the user are encrypted using the Secure Socket Layer (SSL). This is the same functionality used by banks and popular e-commerce services such as Amazon.com for secure communication.

When ShareFile users create folders in the system, only the specified users that are designated by owner of the folder are able to access the contents of those folders. Users who do not have access to the folder will not even see the folder in their view of the system.

Each user of the system has a unique login and password. All user passwords are hashed in the ShareFile database, meaning that not even the ShareFile support personnel have the ability to view or in any way determine a user's password.

ShareFile's computer network security is subject to weekly security audits by a third-party security monitoring firm. This helps us stay one step ahead of the latest security threats.

ShareFile's service was built with reliability and scaleability in mind. Our data center has a hurricane-rated roof, with multiple redundant power sources including a diesel generator with 7 days worth of gasoline in case of a power outage.

What is FTP?

FTP or File Transfer Protocol is a specification for transferring files on the internet. From a technical perspective, FTP exists at a fairly deep layer on the internet, similar to HTTP (you are probably familiar with HTTP because that is the protocol for web pages, which is why you type http:// when visiting a web site).

FTP was developed a long time ago in the early days of the internet. Because long ago it was the only viable way to transfer files electronically, many companies established FTP as their mechanism for making files available to clients, partners, and colleagues and continue to use FTP to this day.

Unfortunately, back when FTP was first created, its authors did not anticipate many of the developments in internet commerce and publishing that have occurred over the past 10 years and FTP now suffers from some critical problems.

1. FTP transfers files and passwords in clear text for anyone to see. This can be a major security hole, especially for companies in businesses such as healthcare, law, accounting, or any industry where data privacy is important.
2. FTP traffic travels over port 21, a special port that is often closed by firewalls at corporations for security reasons. Because of this, many users are not able to use FTP for transferring files.
3. Since FTP is a low-level protocol, it lacks many value-added features such as the ability to search for files, forgotten password notifications, and e-mail upload/download notifications

Will my clients be able to see folders that I've made for other clients?

No. Your clients will only see folders that you have explicitly given them access to. Your company also has the option of preventing clients from seeing other users who have access to the same folder that they do.

How is ShareFile different than FTP?

ShareFile uses a completely different method of transferring files than FTP. Unlike FTP, which transfers files and passwords in clear text for anyone to see, ShareFile uses SSL encryption to protect the privacy of passwords and files. Is there a file size limit on uploading or sending files?

Files up to 2GB in size may be uploaded, sent, or stored on ShareFile. Billing is based bandwidth, which is the amount of upload and download activity per month, as well as total file storage.

How does ShareFile send large files through e-mail?

Instead of attaching the file to your e-mail, you upload it to ShareFile's secure servers. ShareFile will then provide you with a hyperlink that you can send to recipients, either through ShareFile or using your own e-mail software. Recipients will be able to download the file by clicking the hyperlink.

Is ShareFile secure?
